Tour Updates:

A Great Group of Travelers Going to China!:
Walkabout and the Lakewood Elks Travel Committee would like to commend all of you who have patiently remained enthusiastic to our Fall Tour to China. We have had very few cancellations considering the events of the past few weeks, and feel good things will come to those who wait concerning this tour.

SARS syndrome ~ CDC Travel Advisory:
As some of you may already know, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) has issued an Interim Travel Advisory extended to include Mainland China for SARS syndrome. SARS is an Acute Respiratory Syndrome and a new strain of virus simulating flu symptoms, which attack the white blood cells in the body. This currently concerns you, the traveler, the Lakewood Elks Travel Committee, and Walkabout. We will be keeping a close eye on this situation. To learn more about SAR, please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Web site at www.cdc.gov.

On the plus side: Doctors have already isolated the type of virus, and are working on a treatment. The Travel Advisory was extended to all of Mainland China mostly because there was not enough good information provided to rule out the rest of China. This information will be forthcoming and we should see the advisory lifted for the northern Chinese provinces we are to visit. I firmly believe the CDC, research, and treatment information will have SARS syndrome under control long before October, and this will not be an issue.

Worst Case Scenario: Having spoken my opinion, I also feel obligated to cover what could happen. If there is still a Travel Advisory of this nature in affect within 70 to 60 days of travel, the Travel Committee and Walkabout could cancel the trip. An official Travel Advisory issued by the U.S. or Chinese government will guarantee your refunds with trip cancellation insurance.

Prior to 60 days of travel we will approach all members of the tour as to their insurance situation. Please see your insurance coverage options and cancellation schedule below. We do highly suggest trip cancellation insurance.

In the event of a Travel Advisory: Walkabout would have the option of postponing the Chinese tour until a safer date. Also, in place at this time, Walkabout has another exciting and safe tour, “The Best or Eastern and Western Canada”, and has prepared space for all our Elks travelers should we be forced to cancel the Chinese tour.

The Iraqi War:
The Iraqi War has not caused any travel advisory to be put on China. I again am optimistic that the war situation will be resolved to a point of safe travel for all by October. Our troops and country leaders are working very hard to make that happen right now, and I feel we will see the results of their labor before the end of the summer.

Upcoming Travel Information:
One day in L. A.: Walkabout will be offering a one-night layover in Los Angeles for those who wish to break the trip up a bit. This would include airport to hotel transfers, restaurant on site, one night lodging, and return transfer from the hotel to the airport. This information will be released with a sign-up letter by the end of April.

Chinese Visa:
Walkabout will mail Visa information to everyone soon. We cannot apply too early for a Chinese Visa, as it must be validated within 90 days of issuance. When you receive the Visa info, fill out the required paper work and mail your completed forms back to Walkabout. We will submit all our China travelers’ Visas as a group.

Passports:
Walkabout urges all of you who do not have a passport, or one that expires before April of 2004, to apply now. For those who carry a valid passport, we will mail information by the end of May.

Extended Tour:
The Extended tour on October 1 ~ 17, 2003 is Officially SOLD OUT, but we have opened a Wait list at this time! Walkabout would like to thank everyone that took our extended tour. We have a limited number of 60 seats for this tour, and currently we are sold out. Walkabout will accept wait lists at this time for the extended tour. We do have a few seats left on the 14 day main tour traveling on October 5 ~ 18, 2003 for those interested.

Insurance and Cancellation Schedule:
Insurance has become an important part of International group tours. Many of our travelers have responded to our suggested insurance in various ways. As a result of your interest, we have been able to renegotiate a policy that is specially designed for our specific group. This policy is also optional, and on a voluntary basis, but must have a minimum of 20 travelers to become valid. Based on interest, we feel that these goals will be met. As a result, full coverage at a special discounted rate will go into effect for your trip to China.

The advantages with the new Travel Insured special policy are as follows. There are no age categories with this policy, just one price regardless of age.

It is a deluxe coverage plan, including emergency medical and baggage loss.
The savings are significant for anyone over 70 off the brochure rate.

This policy will cover acts of war, as long as the U. S. issues a Travel Advisory against travel for the country we are visiting.

It has increased Bankruptcy protection.

Walkabout will personally handle your insurance claims, and questions
Below is the exact breakdown of your coverage and the rate. If you have already purchased the Travel Insured plan from the brochure, and this policy works better for you, you will receive a rebate from your original purchase.

If you are declining Trip Cancellation Insurance, the following cancellation fees apply. This has been updated, and will be in effect until time of departure. These cancellation fees come directly from Asia Holiday Travel and China Airlines.

  • February 1 ~ March 1, 2003 ---------- $50.00
  • March 1 ~ July 15, 2003 -------------- $200.00
  • July 15, ~ September 1, 2003 -------- $350.00
  • September 2, ~ Sept. 22nd, 2003 ---- $1100.00
  • September 23, ~ Oct. 5, 2003 -------- 100% of tour cost
